A new world record of 33.9% for the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells

On November 3, according to the latest certification report of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells independently developed by the Chinese photovoltaic enterprise - Longi Green Energy Technology Co., LTD. (hereinafter referred to as "Longi Green Energy") reached 33.9%, which is also the highest record for the efficiency of global crystalline silicon-perovski tetandem cells. It is reported that the previous world record for the efficiency of thesolar cell is 33.7%, which was broken by King Saud University of Science and Technology in May this year.

The breakthrough in the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite cells is the latest progress of Longi Green Energy 2023 after 31.8% announced at the Shanghai International Photovoltaic Exhibition (SNEC 2023) on May 24 and 33.5% announced at the European Photovoltaic Exhibition (InterSolar Europe 2023) on June 14. It is also another major breakthrough for Chinese photovoltaic companies represented by the company in the research field of crystalline silicon-perovskite  tandem cells.

The reporter learned from the scene that the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells reached 33.9%, exceeding for the first time the Shockley-Quieser (S-Q) theoretical efficiency limit of 33.7%, which provides significant empirical data to show the advantages of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells relative to the efficiency of crystalline silicon single junction cells.

Li Zhenguo, founder and president of Longi Green Energy, said that the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of solar cells is a key indicator and vane for evaluating the potential of photovoltaic technology. As a mainstream battery technology that accounts for more than 90% of the market share, the conversion efficiency of crystalline silicon single-junction solar cells continues to improve, and it is getting closer and closer to its theoretical efficiency limit of 29.4%. The theoretical efficiency limit of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells can reach 43%, which is recognized as the mainstream technical solution to break the efficiency limit of single crystalline silicon solar cells. The emergence of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell technology has opened up a new track for the development of the next generation of high-efficiency solar cell technology. This means that the same area, absorbing the same amount of light, can emit more electricity.

According to Dr. Xu Xixiang, chief scientist of Longi Green Energy and vice president of the Central Research Institute, in November 2022, Longi Green Energy announced its silicon heterojunction cell efficiency breakthrough of 26.81%, creating a world record in the field of global crystalline silicon single junction solar cells. The research and development team has renewed the world record for the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells, marking that Longi Green Energy has become the world's first in the two major competitions of silicon-based single-junction cells and silicon-based tandem cells, which are the most concerned in the global photovoltaic industry.

It is understood that the new world record of 33.9% is the first time that a Chinese company has broken the record since the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells was recorded in 2016.

Jiang Hua, deputy secretary-general of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, said that Longi Green Energy's 33.9% world record for crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell efficiency means that the company is at a global leading level in the research and development of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell technology.

Jiang Hua pointed out that the photovoltaic industry is a cost-oriented industry, cost reduction and efficiency is the core of development, and continue to improve the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells is an effective measure to reduce the cost of KWH. Once this high-efficiency battery technology is truly mass-produced, it will promote the cost of photovoltaic power generation to decrease significantly compared with the previous, which is absolutely good for promoting the growth of China and even the global photovoltaic market. The growth of the photovoltaic market will also drive the entire energy transformation and energy transformation.
