33.9%! China has set a new world record for the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells

On November 3, according to the latest certification report of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the United States, the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells independently developed by Chinese photovoltaic company LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "LONGi Green Energy") reached 33.9%, which is also the highest efficiency record of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells in the world. It is reported that the previous world record for the efficiency of the cell was 33.7%, which was broken by the King Saudi University of Science and Technology in May this year.

 

This breakthrough in the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells is the latest progress of LONGi Green Energy in 2023 after the announcement of 31.8% at the Shanghai International Photovoltaic Exhibition (SNEC 2023) on May 24 and the 33.5% announcement at the InterSolar Europe 2023 on June 14, and it is also another major breakthrough in the research field of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells by Chinese photovoltaic companies represented by the company.

 

The reporter learned from the scene that the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells reached 33.9%, which exceeded the theoretical efficiency limit of 33.7% for single-junction cells for the first time, which provided significant empirical data for showing the advantages of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells over the efficiency of crystalline silicon single-junction cells.

 

Li Zhenguo, founder and president of LONGi Green Energy, said that the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of solar cells is a key indicator and wind vane for evaluating the potential of photovoltaic technology. As the mainstream cell technology that occupies more than 90% of the market share, the conversion efficiency of crystalline silicon single-junction cells continues to improve, getting closer and closer to its theoretical efficiency limit of 29.4%. The theoretical efficiency limit of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells can reach 43%, which is recognized as the mainstream technical solution to break through the efficiency limit of monocrystalline silicon cells. The emergence of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell technology has opened up a new track for the development of next-generation high-efficiency solar cell technology. This means that the same area, absorbing the same amount of light, can emit more electricity.

 

According to Dr. Xu Xixiang, Chief Scientist of LONGi Green Energy and Vice President of Academia Sinica, in November 2022, LONGi Green Energy announced that the efficiency of its silicon heterojunction cells exceeded 26.81%, setting a world record in the field of crystalline silicon single-junction cells. This time, the R&D team has set a new world record for the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells, marking that LONGi Green Energy has become the world's first in the two major tracks of silicon-based single-junction cells and silicon-based tandem cells, which have attracted the most attention in the global photovoltaic industry.

 

It is understood that the new world record of 33.9% is the first time that a Chinese company has broken the efficiency of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells since 2016.

 

Jiang Hua, deputy secretary-general of the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, said that the world record of 33.9% crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell efficiency set by LONGi Green Energy means that the company's research and development of crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cell technology is at the world's leading level.

 

Jiang Hua pointed out that the photovoltaic industry is a cost-oriented industry, reducing costs and increasing efficiency is the core of development, and continuously improving the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells is an effective measure to reduce the cost of electricity. Once this high-efficiency cell technology is truly mass-produced, it will promote a significant reduction in the cost of photovoltaic power generation compared with before, which is absolutely good for promoting the growth of China's and even the global photovoltaic market. The growth of the photovoltaic market will also drive the entire energy transformation and energy transition.
